Smooth Sailing: Jogless Stripes in the Round

Time: Sunday, June, 2nd 9:00am - 12:00pm

Do you get annoyed by the “jog” at the start of each new color when you knit stripes in the round? In this class, we’ll practice several different ways to avoid this jog and discuss the pros and cons of each technique. You’ll also learn techniques that are applicable to any project worked in the round, including how to join without twisting and how to make a smooth, invisible join in your cast-ons and bind-offs.

Show cast-on smoothing trick and bind-off-in-round trick. Talk about carrying up the sides; twisting (many rows) vs. just starting with the new yarn (few rows between). Show multi-row stripes, show carrying diagonally. Show weaving in ends in duplicate stitch on the back, in the same direction the yarn would have been going.

Intermediate: Students should be able to cast on, bind off, knit, purl, work a small-circumference project in the round on either dpns, magic loop, or two circular needles.

Homework: none.

Supplies: Worsted weight yarn in two contrasting colors and your choice of dpn, magic loop, or two circular needles in a compatible size (US #7-9) suitable for working very small-circumference projects in the round OR your preferred weight yarn and matching needles, scissors, stitch markers, a tapestry needle.

Ciao! Italian Tubular Cast-On and Bind Off

Time: Sunday, June, 2nd 1:30pm - 4:30pm

In this class you'll learn to work both one and two-color Italian and tubular cast-on and bind off. This edging creates a beautiful one-by-one ribbing and is the perfect accompaniment to brioche knitting. But it can also be used any time you want your cast-on or bind-off edges to be virtually invisible, like mitten cuffs, hat edges, and more.

Homework: None

Level: Intermediate — Students must know how to cast on, bind off, knit, purl, increase, and decrease.

Supplies: Approximately 20 yards each of a dark and light-colored worsted-weight yarn; needles in the size you usually use for worsted weight yarn (for example, #7-9 US), needles two sizes smaller, tapestry needle, scissors.
