The Magic of Mosaic

Time: Sunday, October 13th,  9:00am - 12:00pm

Learn to make striking color patterns in your knitting while working only one color per row. Mosaic knitting is incredibly popular right now, and with good reason. It is simple to learn, but once you’ve mastered the concept, the possibilities for play are limitless. We’ll cover mosaic knitting both flat and in the round, and discuss yarn management and color planning. You'll learn what makes mosaic charts different from standard knitting charts, and how to read them. You'll learn the rules of mosaic knitting, and which ones you can break when. You’ll leave this class with the skills and inspiration to tackle any mosaic pattern.

Advanced Beginner:  Students should be able to cast on, bind off, knit, purl, and work a small-circumference project in the round on your choice of dpn, magic loop, or two circular needles.

Homework: With your darker color, cast 30 stitches on to your needles for knitting flat. Knit two rows in garter stitch (knit every row).

Supplies: Worsted weight yarn in two contrasting colors; wound off into two balls of each color that are at least 20 yards long; needles in a compatible size (US #7-9) for working both flat and at a small circumference in the round (double-pointed, one long or two short circular needles), scissors, stitch markers.

Adventures in Short Rows

Time: Sunday, October 13th  1:30pm - 4:30

Short rows allow us to create shaping and dimensionality in our knitting, giving us the ability to turn a sock heel, raise the back of a sweater neck, or allow for extra room in the bust. Short rows can also be a fun and interesting design element when we play with color in our designs.

In this class, you will practice a number of different methods for creating short rows: wrap and turn, Japanese, German, shadow wrap short rows and more. We’ll discuss the benefits of each and talk about how to substitute between them.

Skill Level: Intermediate - Students should be able to cast on, bind off, knit, purl, and slip stitches.

Homework: With smooth, light-colored, worsted-weight yarn and compatible-size (US #7-9) needles for working flat, cast on 15 stitches and work flat in stockinette stitch for an inch. Leave the swatch on the needles and do not break the yarn.

Supplies:  You will need about 30 yards of smooth, light-colored worsted weight yarn and compatible-size (US #7-9) needles OR your preferred weight yarn and matching needles for working flat, and six locking stitch markers or coil-less safety pins.
